Organisation & leadership

Leadership means shaping organisations and people so they reach their goals.

Project management, Lean Six Sigma, logistics and running a business. As a Black Belt, as an operations manager and as a founder with an exit.

01

Lean isn't a corporate topic. It's common sense with tools.

In mid-sized companies, Lean is surprisingly often unknown. Yet it's obvious: focus on what creates value and what the customer pays for. Drop everything else, unless regulations force you to keep it.

02

Clarity decides projects.

What matters most is that everyone knows the method, the goal and the responsibilities. Classic or agile? Ideally a mix. And a simple RACI matrix is often enough for clear accountability.

03

B2B and B2C are two different kinds of logistics.

As an operations manager I was responsible for logistics for brands such as Lego merchandising and the Bud Spencer and Terence Hill shop. The key lesson: B2B and B2C orders need very different processes, and that's a good thing.

04

A good product and good support are the best marketing.

At Massagebooking.de I did no marketing at all and focused only on the product and good customer support. The result: 200 massage studios as customers and a sale to the market leader. I was surprised myself how far that gets you.

05

Leading means creating the conditions.

I prefer to lead as a servant leader. I set the goals and see it as my responsibility to create the conditions in which the team reaches them. My aim: people who become better than me.

06

Good leadership knows where it's vulnerable.

Where am I dependent, on large customers, on single suppliers? Knowing that lets you set the right focus and have a plan B ready before you need it.

07

Good organisations keep themselves in check.

I like to build departments with interlocking goals. Customer service and marketing both need happy customers: if marketing promises the impossible, service fails. If service does a poor job, marketing fails. That way they keep each other honest and make each other better.

08

Convince with proof, not debate.

Not everyone is on fire right away, but decisions still have to be made. So I quickly build a mockup or an MVP that shows it works. And I bring the sceptics into responsibility together with the champions.

09

To understand a company, look at the money first.

What do customers pay for? Where are the big costs? The answers immediately show which processes matter and where optimisation really has an impact.

From practice

  • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt: more efficiency and fewer errors in the warehouse
  • Operations manager: logistics for Lego merchandising
  • Massagebooking.de: 200 studios as customers, exit to the market leader
